Music Downloads, New Internet Technologies, And the Future Music Industry

Music Downloads, New Internet Technologies, And the Future Music Industry

Even though some mainstream artists have recently decided to release their music on LP’s, I’m guessing for nostalgia reasons only, they still know that the digital format is what people really want. A few years ago digital music saw a boost in popularity because of a site like Napster. Today, the list of digital music sites is growing, and for good reason. Everybody has a digital music player, also known as an mp3 player. Compact discs are still popular because people like the idea of having something tangible in their hands, probably for the same reasons that we don’t yet live in a paperless society. However, music downloads are quickly becoming the popular medium for obtaining music. The process is fast, as in instant. If you pay a fee for it, it’s legal, and the best part is, its digital. You get a high sound quality in a small sized file because of the recording format. Although people like sound engineers may or may not be able to tell a difference between an mp3 and a CD file, the average person will never hear the difference.
Sites like MySpace and companies like Apple with iTunes have given bands that might not ever see their music encased in a CD wrapper the chance to showcase their talent via the Internet. Just about every band you can think of has a MySpace page, and if they don’t, they could be slightly missing out on the power of the web 2.0 era. The Internet can reach far more people than a tank of gas and a dream. Its smart marketing, at a fairly cheap cost. If you go and see an unknown band perform in a club or bar, chances are they have a MySpace page and, they’ll be happy to tell you about it so you’ll tell other people too. The Internet can do more for a band who wants you to download songs from their CD than the typical music promotion model. It’s the word of mouth activity about an artist that spreads faster than anything.
Major artists rely heavily on marketing and distribution through their major record label to get their music out to the masses. If they are an established artist, their name and music can speak for itself. Independent musicians may have a harder time building a base if they just tour in their hometown or play the occasional state fair. The Internet has changed the way we listen to and buy music. If a band wants to be noticed beyond the zip code they reside in, on a shoestring budget, then they’ve got to use the Internet to get their music heard by as many people as possible, and build their ‘buzz’.
New social music sites such as JamBuzzer help artists not only build their buzz by helping them spread their music virally to potential fans all over the world, but also help fans find quality music that is becoming harder to find in the major industry roster of artists.
Many independent artists and bands are self-produced and self-funded, so they rely completely on their talent, and their knowledge of the Internet to be heard. The great thing about sitest like JamBuzzer and MySpace is that an artist can release individual singles or a few songs from their CD for you to listen to; and get feedback quickly as well as have the potential to build an army of fans who will tell others about their music. It is similar to the days when cassette singles were popular. If you liked the one song that was offered, you might go buy the rest of the album. The same strategy applies today with music downloads; give the potential fans a teaser, let them hear it for free so maybe they’ll like it and buy the whole collection. It’s a gamble that’s paying off for some artists, and the future of the music business could potentially be one where artists make more money by giving their songs away fro free than by the standard model. This new model however, will take strategic planning, and although it’s a risk, the potential reward is quite high.
In today’s digital music world, downloaded songs are a great indication to an artist that their music is popular. Some tracking tools can even show where the majority of their songs are being downloaded, as well as from what cities. This gives the artist a chance to possibly tour that area and promote their music live, and even sell merchandise. Newer bands that just don’t have the money to pay for a tour realize that the internet is the best vehicle they have to get their music heard locally as well as around the world.
Truly, music downloads have changed the way music is heard, so much that it is creating a stir to the ‘elephant in the room’ major record companies.. Many of the major labels are fighting the digital age because the old way of doing things allowed them more control over an artist.. Today’s up and coming artists have the ability to do what they want, on their own terms. Self-produced free agents of music are revolutionizing the way you hear about a new artist. Because the major labels are losing the creative control in the industry, the artists have more freedom to really express their talents without being ‘too risky’ for the labels. As a result, it’s possible that in the years to come, we will get better, true music, and there may even be a battle of the Internet bands with all of the new technologies that sites such as JamBuzzer are developing.

Music Cell Phones Tips to Keep in Mind

Cell phones have changed a lot in the recent times. Rather than just being a device that is used to make and receive calls, it is today a complete device that takes care of ones portable entertainment, information and telecommunication needs. One of the newer functions of a cell phone is a music player. Music player cell phones can play music to a particular satisfaction level, and are definitely a good idea if you are looking for some cheap portable music device. Here are some points that you should keep in mind before opting in
for a music cell phone.

The Cell Phone should have an Upgradable Memory Slot

Just like a computer, a cell phone has a hard disk, which is normally called the memory. The cell phone has inbuilt memory and external memory. The inbuilt memory is used to store the cell phone requisites like the operating system, the theme, the standard built in ringtones, etc. It is the external memory that is normally used to save the user data like music, documents, and other media. It goes without saying that the inbuilt memory in the cell phone would be quite less, and you would not be satisfied by the number of songs that you would be able to save on your cell phone. Therefore, make sure that the music cell phone you are buying has an external memory slot. Some music cell phones allow for up to eight GB of extendable memory.

The Cell Phone should have an advanced Music Player

Music players are a default in any music cell phone. Do not buy a cell phone if it touts itself to be a music cell phone but does not have a music player. A music player is the software through which you create your playlists, and shuffle or repeat the tracks that you want, add images and box art to your album, etc. Some music players also allow information about the track to be taken off the Internet – making your music look more awesome.

The Cell Phone Should Have a Flight Mode

Flight Mode is one of the newest features that one can see in the cell phones, but is quite useful. A flight mode is basically the mode where the cell phone is off the network, but can be used to play media like movies, music, etc. This is quite important for those times when you do not wish to disturbed by a call, but want to listen to music or watch a particular movie on your cell phone.

The Cell Phone should be a Radio Player

Yes, all of us have our playlists and favorite movies and music that we upload on our cell phone. But there comes a time in the day when we just want to listen to what the world is listening to. It is at these moments that the radio player comes handy. Make sure that your music cell phone has an inbuilt radio player, so that you can listen to the radio when you are out of your own music. These are just some of the aspects that you should keep in mind while buying a music playing cell phone. Are you looking for cheap cell phones? We have a huge range.

Music Basics – How To Read Guitar Sheet Music As

Music Basics – How To Read Guitar Sheet Music As Tabs (Tablature) for Absolute Beginners

Before you start to learn to play the guitar you should learn to read guitar tabs. When you see your first tab it will look totally alien and very complex. Thankfully, it's actually incredibly simple:  all you need is some basic knowledge of the guitar and how to count.

I'm going to split this article into two sections: the guitar and the tab. The guitar section will tell you what you need to know about the guitar body (if you already know about frets, skip the guitar section) and the tab section will apply your new knowledge to a tab.

The Guitar

For this article I'm going to assume that you're using a conventional 6 string guitar.

To read a tab you need to know about frets. The frets are marked by lines on the guitar neck. Before the first line you have what is known as the first fret. After the first line and before the second line we have the second fret and so on.

The Tab

Here is an example of guitar tab:

From PBGuitars

The lines represent the guitar strings. The line on the top of the tab represents the bottom string on the guitar and the line on the bottom represents the top string on the guitar.

The numbers written on the line represent the fret. So, if the there is a three on the third line it means third string third fret. The number indicates the fret you put your finger on and the line the number is on tells you which string to pluck.

To play the first note on the tab you would put your finger on the first fret and the second string (from bottom of the guitar).

That's all there is to reading tab. All you have to do is get your hands on some a get playing.

Music At Your Fingertips

Do you love listening to the radio? If you are just an all around huge music fan, you might enjoy turning on the radio and listening to your favorite songs. But, the problem with the radio is, songs are spontaneous and it is hard to get a station that plays all the songs you like, or even any that filters out the songs that makes you roll your eyes in exasperation. But now, with Pandora Radio, you can create custom radio stations that are just for you.

Created by the Music Genome Project, Pandora radio is an automated music recommendation program that is an Internet radio station. You can access it from your computer or from an application that you place on your iTouch or iPhone, or you Android phones, your Slim Devices and Sonos or through Windows Mobile devices.

If you want to get Pandora, you can get it for free with the free subscription that still has many advertisements or you can get the one without ads for a subscription fee. Of course, with the former there are certain limitations to how much you can stream per month and to a few other features of the station.

But, if you love music and love the spontaneity of the radio, you will love Pandora. To begin, you select a station from their collection of over seven hundred thousand tracks. You can type in your favorite artist, or you can type in your favorite song, or even your favorite album. Pandora will present a list for you to choose from and then will begin playing a song or selection from what you chose. After that, Pandora will begin streaming songs that have a related style and sound to the one you chose. Various artists will appear, all of them somewhat related to the song or artist that you chose.

As each song plays, you will see a small thumbs up or thumbs down icon near the bottom and then it will be up to you to choose whether the specific choice Pandora made is pleasing to you. If not, they will take it out of the station and further optimize your station to songs that fit the original entry. If you do like it, they will broaden your search even further. If you put a thumbs down twice for one artist, that artist and their entire collection of work will be banned from your streams unless you have marked the artist positively elsewhere.

Pandora also provides you with a menu that will give you a variety of choices. You can choose to not play the song for a month, or a button asking why this song was chosen, or to move the song to another station, or bookmark it, or buy it. If you bookmark the song, you can go to your bookmarked tabs and you can listen to a sample of it again and then decide if you want to buy it off Amazon or iTunes. If you love music, then you will love this station that allows you to custom create a stream of music that is perfect for you. Not only will you hear songs that you love, but you will be introduced to related music and you might even discover a band that will become your very favorite through these means. Or you might hear a new song by an artist that you only vaguely knew before.

Music and the Brain

It can be easily observed that music has an effect on the senses. Music effects the body and the brain in various ways. There has been some scientific research in recent times to find out the relationship between music and intelligence. Even though it seems fairly obvious that music has an effect on the brain cells themselves and that listening some forms of music, especially western and Indian classical can increase intelligence, science, as always has been trying to seek a proof of this phenomenon.Researchers believe that certain types of musical actually creates new neural pathways in the brain. That means that the brain can function in a different filed than that of memory alone. After listening to classical music, adults can do certain spatial tasks more quickly, such as putting together a jigsaw puzzle. Why does this happen? The classical music pathways in our brain are similar to the pathways we use for spatial reasoning. When we listen to classical music, the spatial pathways are turned on and ready to be used.University of California, Irvine, 36 people took standardized intelligence tests after three 10 minute periods of Mozart. Those who listened to Mozart’s Sonata for Two Pianos (K448) scored an average 119 – eight points higher than those who listened to a relaxation tape and nine points higher than those who listened to silence. Mozart’s music is quite complex and very patterned said neurobiologist Frances H Rauscher, the study’s lead author. Rauscher said the complex music may “prime” the brain for mathematics or other analytical work because it triggers the same brain activity. “We predict that music lacking complexity or which is repetitive may interfere with rather than enhance abstract reasoning,” the researchers said in the journal Nature. (UPI, Deseret News Oct 14 1993 Entire study documented in Nature Vol. 365 14 October 1993.)To know more about Mozart effect, see here. The music most people call classical – works by composers such as Bach, Beethoven, or Mozart – is different from other kinds of music as it has a more complex musical structure. Researchers think the complexity of classical music is what primes the brain to solve spatial problems more quickly. So listening to classical music may have different effects on the brain than listening to other types of music. One might recall how classical music appears to be tedious, boring or may also give one a headache. I have especially noticed how people just cant stand listening to Bach – it just gets too much to take for them. Why does this happen? First reason might be because one is not used to listening to it; therefore, there is no identification with it as such. Secondly, this might be because the mind needs to be very attentive and swift to follow music – the sounds, the notes, the complexity of the musical architecture – and when one is listening without paying attention there is bound to be a conflict, resistance of some kind. Thirdly, probably because one is accustomed to treat music as something separate, outside of oneself. According to Steven Gillman, a brain researcher, listening to and participating in music creates new neural pathways in the brain that stimulate creativity. Studies have shown that music actually trains the brain for higher forms of thinking. Music stimulates the mind, encourages creativity and helps to lay a foundation for learning that leads to higher intelligence and aptitude. GJ Whitrow quoted Einstein: ‘He often told me that one of the most important things in his life was music. Whenever he felt that he had come to the end of the road or into a difficult situation in his work he would take refuge in music and that would usually resolve all his difficulties.’ Einstein is also thought to have said about his theory of relativity: ‘It occurred to me by intuition, and music was the driving force behind that intuition. My discovery was the rest of musical perception.’”In recent years much discussion has surrounded the role of music in child development. Here is an article on the role of music in child development.According to Plato: “…music is a more potent instrument than any other for education…” now scientists know why. Music, they believe, trains the brain for higher forms of thinking. After eight months of musical training, 3 year olds were expert puzzle masters, scoring 80% higher than their playmates did in spatial intelligence-the ability to visualize the world accurately. This skill later translates into mathematical/conceptual and engineering skills.Preschoolers who studied piano performed 34% better in spatial and temporal reasoning ability than preschoolers who spent the same amount of time learning to use computers. (Rauscher & Shaw. As reported in Neurological Research, February 1997)The very best engineers and technical designers in the Silicon Valley industry are, nearly without exception, practicing musicians. (Grant Venerable, The Center for the Arts in the Basic Curricum, New York, 1989) For the unborn child, classical music, played at a rhythm of 60 beats per minute, equivalent to that of a resting human heart, provides an environment conducive to creative and intellectual development. (Dr.Thomas Veert, The Secret Life of the Unborn Child)Listening to music, especially classical, can help in increasing listening skills as well as boost intelligence.

Music and Skateboarding

Music has always been involved in the world of skateboarding since its earliest history. The counterculture of skateboarding, in fact, is known for its wide variety musical styles. Today, there are several different genres that are closely identified with skateboarding. The music most identified with the sport tends to have a fast beat to pump up your adrenaline while skating.Since skateboarding grew out of surfing culture during the 1950s and 1960s, it follows logically that the music and culture of skateboarding was originally quite similar to that of surfing. However, skateboarding would soon be seen as more counter-culture than surfing, and began to develop a rebellious attitude displayed through clothing and music. This punk influence is still quite evident in today’s skateboarding culture. One of the first music styles to be associated specifically with skateboarding was reggae. In the late 1980s, the SMA Rocco Division skateboarders, including Jesse Martinez and Jef Hartsel, helped to usher in the emerging reggae-skateboarding culture. The song “I N I Style” was credited to Jef Hartsel and fellow skateboarders from Rocco, Jamie Zebulon and Albert Naphtali. Throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s, several of those involved in the skateboarding industry recorded reggae-style songs. While skateboarding has traditionally been associated with punk or rock music, recently hip-hop and street culture have embraced the sport, having a huge influence on the music enjoyed by skateboarders. Today, skateboarding has grown to encompass a diverse fusion of cultures, including punk, hard rock, street, and hip cop culture. As a result, there is a wide variety of musical styles that are enjoyed by skateboarders around the world, though there is also a style popularized in skate shops that is specific to skateboarding and related sports. One of the more recent moves within the skateboarding culture is the trend towards “emo” or “pop-punk” bands like Fall Out Boy or Green Day. These bands are very popular not only within the skateboarding community but also in the larger world.Often, skateboarders will listen to their favorite music when skating around town or trying to get themselves pumped up to try new tricks. A perennial favorite among skateboarders is the band “CKY.” The brother of popular pro skateboarder and stuntman Bam Margera (known for his “Jackass” movies) is in the band, one reason for the band’s continuous popularity within the skateboarding subculture. Formed in 1996, CKY videos and music have long been favorites of skaters.MXPX is another mainstay among skaters. MXPX is for upbeat music that is good for practicing tricks. For skaters who particularly enjoy getting their adrenaline pumping before a big race or performing a new trick, check out Offspring, NoFx, Rancid, Dropkick Murphys, or Flogging Molly. All are quite popular among the skateboarding crowd. If you are a skateboarder looking to find some new bands, head to your local skateboarding shop. Skateboarding goes hand in hand with the local music scene. Often, it is the smaller local bands that are more popular within the skateboarding sub-culture. If you skateboard with friends, ask them to bring some music; you never know what new bands you might be introduced to. While there are certainly some bands that remain popular with skaters year after year, the styles are always changing, and the subculture of skateboarding has grown to accommodate nearly every musical style.

Music and Music Teaching Perception by Now and Then

Music nowadays seems to be one of the most popular hobbies that the youngsters are indulging in. For some, it may be just a pure form of entertainment or a way of living, whereas for the others, it can be a serious escape from their stressful lives. They use music as a medium of conveying their suppressed emotions. Not too surprisingly, it makes them really into music.Because of the different influences that the youth are exposed into, they are easily acquiring the curiosity of engaging into learning music. It may not exactly be reading musical notes and the other formal stuff regarding such, but at least, something highly relevant to it like playing musical instruments or simply singing. Before, people, specially the youth, viewed Music, a subject in their primary and secondary schooling, as a conservative and boring one. With lots of different bits and pieces that should be memorized and understood without knowing their use and purpose, music then had been a vague and dull form of school activity to do.Perhaps, the reason is that they relate music with church where they usually hear the hymns and praises when they were kids. They thought music should be solemnly expressed all the time.As these young people aged up, they began to realize how interesting music could be far from what they used to perceive. From all the different genres and styles, they found a match. I am truly glad to say that finally, they are now fascinated with music learning as well as music teaching. Many are aware that music centers began to spring suddenly nowadays. People look for formal lessons and their aim is, of course, to learn music. They also want to develop the talents they believe they are blessed with.Music teaching is definitely an issue when talking about learning music. Aside from being considered as something pretty difficult and tedious, many believe that it requires lots of effort, patience, and passion in doing so.However, with the kinds of trends, technology and methods that we have right now, music teaching has become less complicated. Indeed, different resources and tools are made readily available to be an aid to anyone who has interests in music teaching. It may be through various means like seeking the help and guidance of music enthusiasts and experts, enrolling in various learning centers, reading music-related books, availing advanced music gadgets, or browsing the web.Music teaching has been both the career and passion of many musically inclined individuals around the globe. Thus, schools of music spring forth worldwide, paving the way for music enthusiasts for greater opportunities globally. That is how powerful music and music teaching can be.

Music and It’s Influence to Our Life

We can’t deny that music can affect our state of mind, influencing our daily life, and the reason for this is mysterious. We always look for a music that is something livelier while doing some physical work or exercises or out socializing on a larger group and keep listening to relaxing music for a nice and quiet romantic dinner. An increased rate of car accidents ican be caused by listening to fast music while driving and based on recent studies the Mozart effects claim to increase intelligence. We might have heard of farmers who increase their production by playing music to their animals. Below are the main aspects of music and their facets in turn that influence our daily life.Tempo and rhythmPitch Melody and HarmonyTempo and Rhythm and its combination has an immediate physical impact on our perceptions. The rhythm of an object suggests more or less frequent movement to qualify the repetitive nature of the underlying beat, even though the tempo of a piece of music might be slow and relaxed. A high frequency of notes can suggest a degree of contained excitement within that relaxed state. Music tends to have a steady tempo to it, often measured in beats per minute. Most of the music based on simple observation is in the range of 50-200 beats per minute, the same as the extreme range of our heartbeats. The music tempo of the piece of music roughly equates with the heartbeat associated with the corresponding state or emotions.120-160 is common in some energetic situation since the heartbeat and the music tempo has a strong degree of suggestion. 80-120 is quiet a common tempo, since we crave some degree of excitement from our entertainment. 80-100 is moderately alert and interested otherwise 100 upward is increasingly lively excited or agitated. Ranging from 60-80 beats per minute is calm and relaxes, less than 60 often very relaxed, introspective or even depressed.Pitch, Melody & HarmonyPitch on its own affects our perception on how we perceived sounds and music providing a basic scale from high = light, happy, carefree to low = dark, sad, ominous. As part of our evolutionary heritage we tend to find large things more threatening than smaller things. Generally bigger objects make deeper noises whether long column of air or long strings in a musical instrument, big chest, large animal footsteps, or large objects banging together. Conversely smaller instruments, short columns of air, short strings, small animals or objects make higher pitch noises.Harmony is the combination of tones with different pitches, Even though some are seem to be close to the combination of notes is completely the natural set of different notes produced by something vibrating and easily demonstrated musically of brass instruments. Those “natural “(without keys) instruments such as bugle, octaves, fifths and thirds produced are a series of notes. That is so well together to make “harmonious ” sounds like major chords. String instruments can be demonstrate the lowest notes of the harmonic series by playing the strongest ” harmonics” of the strings which divide the length into fractions like halves, thirds, quarters, fifths, etc. All that varies in degrees within all notes, and their proportions help to make sounds their unique color or tones, is always presented by harmonic.Repetition is the simplest form of PATTERN. If we see something familiar, then it triggers memories and related thoughts are sometimes consciously and unconsciously. The repetition need not to be exact but “similar” enough to trigger familiarity. The aspects of our intelligence allowed us to adopt in so many different climates and conditions that make the best use of available shelter and resources, to build language and culture to communicate to each other in succeeding generations. It also allow us to appreciate and to create pattern for its own sake in the form of visual and aural arts which human brains particularly seem to have a highly developed and flexible pattern recognition capability.

Music A Key Ingredient to Any Home Billiard or Game

Music A Key Ingredient to Any Home Billiard or Game Room

Music in billiard and rec rooms is essential if you want to get the full fun and exciting atmosphere the room can provide. In so many ways, music adds a certain ambiance not felt without it. It does much more than add to the mood of your game room. Perhaps best of all, aside from adding excitement, music tends to spawn tons of memories, also. Music means so many different things to almost all walks of life. And with so many different decades, musical genres, and musical styles to choose from, there is some type of music out there to suit almost anybody. From classical to current dance and top 40 selections, music has always been around usin our cars, on our televisions, and constantly running through our minds, sometimes even driving us proverbially crazy. So why not have it in your billiard or rec room, too? A plethora of musical systems and devices are out on the market that would more than suffice for any small-to-large-sized billiard or game room. Whichever musical system you decide upon, remember that you will want to provide a widely assorted variety of musical styles. You will want to have selections for every type of person, whether it is friends, colleagues, children, adults, women, men, etc. I know that trying to please everyone is a hard task, but each individual has his or her own musical preference, and it is best to have an array of musical selections from which to choose. Of course, each musical outlet available for a home billiard or game room has both advantages and disadvantages over others. Some more popular musical devices for your billiard or game room, along with their more common advantages and disadvantages, include: AM/FM Radio – Free, easy to install, decent musical selection, but full of commercials and rather repetitive Satellite Radio – Probably the widest variety of selections, very few repeats, and almost no commercials and advertisements, but involves a monthly fee, and setup and installation process is a bit more involved than just flipping a switch Internet Radio (Pandora, etc.) – A wide array of music is available and can be narrowed down by search. Sometimes fees are involved, but not usually. Internet access and a sound system in your billiard room with internet connections is required, and streamability can be a potential issue, especially in a basement game room or with a slow internet speed connection. CDs or Pre-Recorded Songs – Very easy to change musical selections, but variety usually depends on the extent of game room owner’s CD collection. Also, unless you play a CD in its entirety, you are constantly having breaks in the music and interruptions in your billiard game or other activity. Jukebox – Provides perhaps the most control over musical selections being added to your game room experience. A jukebox can be filled with whatever vinyls or songs that the owner desires, and many selections can be chosen at once, avoiding “dead air” time you may experience with CDs or other manual musical outlets. Also, it provides, unlike other musical outlets, a more nostalgic value to your game room. However, it can be expensive, considering the initial purchase and constant new musical selections you may choose to fill it with. Changing records and labels is also rather time consuming, not to mention that any jukebox can only hold a limited number of musical selections. Karaoke Machine – One of the more fun musical devices for a game room or recreation area. It provides hours of entertainment, and can actually even be one of the “games” in a home game room. Some karaoke machines allow you to play the real songs without actually singing along, but some do not, providing nothing more than personal entertainment. Also, musical selections are limited and usually preprogrammed into the machine, not allowing for much, if any, musical expansion. With all of the musical output devices available for a home billiard or game room, along with the excitement and mood music brings to almost any situation, having no music in your game room is like having no milk for your cereal. It is okay without it, but they complement each other nicely. And the memories that music invokes in people will add to your and your guests’ overall billiard and game room experience, providing unforgettable, non-stop fun no matter what game is at hand. For more ideas on how to make your billiard and game room experience more exciting and memorable, including furniture additions and other complimentary rec room games, please go to Billiard N Bar Stools to view more articles, literature, and information.
